Anyhow I know I’ve been kinda slacking over here so I figured here something else that rather pleasing. I’ve mainly been focusing for he fundraiser show and sell up at my church this Saturday. Since I kinda got the feel for things last year I’m trying to work on the things that I screwed up on massively. Mainly the lack of hanging wire and T/L Pins to ensure things are well secured and hung up (and not falling down all night). So after work this week I’ll be putting the rest of my time into that. Then hopefully by Monday I’ll be back to posting new stuff.

Year of the Dragon

Well, if you haven’t heard by now it’s the Chinese year of the Dragon. I’m sure in the past week or so it’s phased past you , and you didn’t give it much thought. Well, neither did I at first… Mainly because I’m not Chinese, or even Asian for that matter. Maybe you can call me an Asian-wanna-be or something. So anyway here’s the first real painting for the new year. I could blather on about how it’s the first step in a push for dynamic landscapes but I’ll let someone else explain it for me:

“This is lovely. You've definitely achieved a dynamic effect here. Great diagonals everywhere. The eye is drawn in a quick, jagged path to the building, which is exactly what should happen in a piece like this, it adds to the emotion and impact. The unstable composition (look at all those inverted triangles!) makes it feel like the rocks are really plummeting toward the viewer (I feel almost breathless looking at them). The fact that the eye can't travel in straight lines throughout the piece, but curves and turns with the movement of the rocks draws the viewer into the action. You've achieved a great sense of movement and urgency.
I love the palette, the red of the building helps draw the eye straight to it (dodging a few boulders on the way). Makes me feel like I'm reaching for the building as the rocks are falling down around me, like a last hope before total darkness.”

End of the Year: Reflection

What!? It’s only the 9th. Yeah, but the way things are going now I won’t be getting around to posting anything else until the new year. So this is my reflection on the year.

Where my Art Was

This past year my art has had three very distinct series. The “Eyes of the Child” series focused back on the basic Elements of Design, specifically color and shape. Using newspaper I created a new line of pieces with visual complexity. The “Bob in Space” series was driven through experimentation and a further look at color theory. With it’s bright colors and early steps toward perspective, the series was/is my favorite from this year. The final major series was the “Marbled Background” pieces. Working with layers of color to create a complex background while still retaining a minimalistic quality, the series brought my work in color theory full circle.

This Year’s Achievements

I really took my understanding of the basics to a new level. With great landmarks in color theory, focused light sources, and their shadows, I was able to expand into more dynamic landscapes and mixed media pieces. The first show/sale back in February jumpstarted a true revolution. I never would have guessed that I’d be establishing an online shop, let alone be able to sell much of anything, and I’m very thankful for everyone’s help getting me there.

Where my Art is going

This reflection is doing me a lot of good. I now have some set goals for next year in terms of what I do want to achieve in a more active manner. I want to challenge myself by starting to work with urban subject matters (cityscapes, factories, bustling streets, etc.). For a long time I’ve wanted to get back to doing some more surreal work, and with my main focus for the year of “Food” I think I’ll achieve just that. What’s that on the hill side? A tree? NOPE! It’s a giant broccoli floret! Cheese Mountains, Spaghetti Waterfalls, Apple Houses, and the Banana Moon will surely create some interesting new possibilities. My final look at the new year will be to bring back my first mixed media concepts. The simple look of a colored background and black overlay in acrylic or ink. All of my new work I’m striving to create some incredible and dynamic compositions, which although may reduce the number of pieces I create, will inevitably make them better and better over time.

Plans for the Youtube Channel

Yes we all know that the recent format changes are hideous! What? You like them? Well I don’t care for you as a person then. Anyhow, in order to keep up with a recent flux in subscribers (mainly due to the art videos) I’ve decided to do some cleaning. The new year will bring some major deleting or old content and copyrighted things. I was offered partner, but I’ll need to monitor things closer if I decide to accept. And with all the nasty format changes that already happened (and those that will be coming) I want to make the transition easier on my subscribers.

Plans for the Blog!

Redesign! But not reformatting. After that small rant on YouTube's or rather Google's terrible design decisions, I realized that I can never do that without being just another pain. So do you see this glowly sort of artistic light painting background image? The dark overall color? It’s not very friendly is it? Well that’s what I’m going to change. I’m going to be playing around with colors mainly and not anything with the navigation. Because let’s be honest, there’s nothing wrong with the navigation. It’s clean and simple enough. Anything else would be beating a dead horse.

So I want to apologize for not updating in a while. I’ve been way too occupied playing the new Zelda game and have shifted my art a little recently. I finally decided to use my 3x3 foot canvas I made back in the summer, and I painting more of a challenge for myself on it. So I went into photoshop with my stylus and did a concept piece, which turned out amazing!

Oddly enough I think I finally figured out digital painting. So after working out this concept I did this too.

I’m also working on a digital album cover for a friend of mine who is releasing a Christmas Piano album. I wanted to work out a more dynamic composition with this as we look over Santa’s shoulder, but it turned out being too far out of my reach. This is pretty much what I ended up with.

The album will be a digital release for Amazon MP3 and/or iTunes. I’ll update you guys when I know he released it.

Oh, yeah and I am still working on real paintings, I’ve got two plus the big golden city one (though I imagine the city will keep me busy well into Febuary). I should have a new one up in the next week or two.

I am a nerd!

Yeah, in case the years of blogging didn't give that away. But seriously, I've crossed the my own personal nerd threshold and pre-ordered the new Zelda yesterday. Yeah, ok, pre-ordering isn't as stigma...ed as it used to be for gamers but even still. I swore I wouldn't do it, I claimed I could handle it, but I gave in. But hey just because I'll have it two days after it's release, shipped personally to my door doesn't mean I can loose control of myself right? Right? RIIIIIIIGHT!?

So as a final note I’d like to talk about my upcoming online shop. Man I haven’t touched base with my surreal side in quite awhile. While this brilliant sunset isn’t the “creepy surreal” like my earlier work, it’s still certainly out of the ordinary. As for the stormy piece. Well that I was inspired just by looking up. Yes, after work one day in the wee morning hours the subtle variations in the dark storms sky were quite the interesting sight. So with this new piece I was trying to make this cliff looking pathway through space. And it worked! .........
Sort of.

Ok so, what I should have done here is instead of painting the cliffs onto everything, I should have used the background as a base, and just painted some small highlights for the pathway and cliffs. But now I know for next time.

New Things

Well, I finally did get a new camera the other day. It's classy! Probably one step down from a Digital SLR. So the photos of my work will be consistent and clear from now on (because the 14 megapixels help too). So the second of these two works were taken with that camera. Granted I'm taking a little time to get to know it, and get comfortable with it so if something is a little off then that's my bad. Any way, I also ended up getting a 1 TB external hard drive to store my more crazy big files. Like my film work as well as a bunch of songs. The only down side to making the transfer is that it screwed up my playlists...alot! Oh well, here's some art as usual:

News and Art, today is a good day for the blog!

So in about a month I'll be participating in something called "Sundae Market" which has been described as an artist/hipster flee market. Hopefully I'll get the chance to unload a bunch of artwork. Speaking of selling, I've been also working on getting pretty much all of my work framed this summer. So far I'm doing better than I thought, I've been framing left and right and finally my "ready to go" pile is larger than my "needs frames or mattes" pile. Upon getting a few frames (for free) I got 3 5x5" frames, which prompted the following 3 works of art. Which you can see are in frames.

Well today was great for reminiscing. As I dropped off some of my recent work at my old school, for the annual district art show. The only real down side here is that I won’t be able to post any pictures of the show since, well, my camera is broken now. Well, not so much broken, but has a bad CCD card. As for getting pictures of my art, well that’s been reserved for my mom’s camera. Though I should be picking up a new one sometime in the next month, so it’s really not that bad. Anyway the pieces that were chosen to be in the show include several of my mixed media series from this year (the eyes of a child series), as well as two of my “Mist” paintings inspired by the work of fellow Youtube Contemporary Tim Gagnon. Once of which I just finished the other day…and can be seen below:

Cancer, Semester, and Show

Well there’s a lot happening right now, some good and some bad.
The Good: New Art as always, reaching the end of the semester, and I’ll be in a new show this May.
The Bad: My Grandmother has been in the hospital with cancer related surgery and recovery. It’s been tough on my family.
The Breakdown: I’ve actually been painting more since what happened to my Grandma…I think it’s how I’ve been coping.
The show will be not a full thing for me like the last one, but me jumping into my Old High School’s annual show as an alumni artist. So exciting news there.

A Cancer Inside Piece Breakdown:

This Piece is very sentimental to me. My Grandmother has been in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery and has for the first time in my life seemed "old." This has been a response piece to all the updates I've been hearing from day to day about her bizarre Alzheimer's and meds induced stories.
Symbolism:

In the Eyes of a Child:

The 2011 Art Series

What is it about the world through the eyes of a child that fascinates the minds of adults? At a certain age when we find the answers we once sought, we stop wondering about the world and move on. Yet so often we come back to the yearning of our youth for answers to the simplest of questions. We are creatures of habit I suppose. Then there are the artists, whose role is to show the world visually, and often in life’s simplest moments. My work for the year of 2011 will be rooted in the basic elements of design: space, line, color, shape, texture, form, and value. Using these basic elements as the core base to each new piece I hope to re-establish a vision of the world that has since been lost. For years I have been painting landscapes, but for now I need to look at the basics rather than seeking to paint something complex. Beauty is simplicity. Simplicity is Design. Design leads to great art. Great art is beauty in its purest form.

The recent turn to using newspaper and a simple complexity of layers in my mixed media work has allowed for a remarkable freedom in my creative side. I’m not worried about symbolism, because the spontaneity of the work speaks for itself. In the finished product different people may find their own meaning in the piece, and that becomes its true purpose; to unite the world through the eyes of a child, in life’s simplest elements of design.

The Irony of the Sale

So I did this painting last may called Morning Mist, and it turns out that it was the talk of my show/sale the other day. Mainly since it wasn’t for sale. Sort of that “you want what you can’t have” mentality I think. So I set out to make a better one and sell it next time around. I don’t know when my next sale will be but I think I succeeded in improving on it.

Show and Sell Results

Well? How did it go? 17 of the 68 pieces were sold, personally I think that’s pretty good. I also had a number of my personal collection of works up (ones that I wasn’t selling), and those became the talk of the whole collection. Not to mention a few kids signing my comments book with such statements like “I really wanted one but my mom wouldn’t let me.”
Even with as much as I had left bringing home, I was rather satisfied with this. There were some 350+ people at the dinner and at least half of them took the time to walk the makeshift gallery.
Although I believe the highlight of the night was being able to meet all kinds of new fans. One person of interest was someone who introduced himself as a professional artist. James Guentner who also took interest in my work was there by sheer coincidence.

Minor Math and Framing

I really hate math…A LOT. But it does have some practical use in art with cutting and measuring stuff. Not that I’ve done that recently, I just cheated with a cardboard template. Don’t know what I’m talking about? It’s ok, you don’t have to. I’m just rambling.

But I am working on some new ink drawings as well as prep’ing for my upcoming sale. For starters my ink drawing of the city I’m putting aside for awhile since it’s just not fun for me anymore, and I’m having some general frustrations with it. What I’m working on now is a 5x11” thing of a canyon, sure to be one of my best when it’s finish.

For today though, here’s a repost of an old 2008 piece in the mix for my sale, which I finish up the frame for this afternoon.

News!

First I’ve set a sale date to my Parish’s annual Spaghetti Dinner. Hopefully, I’ll have a corner somewhere where I can unload some paintings FINALLY! So that’s happening next Saturday the 12th, and before then I’ll be preparing and cleaning my works I have available.

Secondly I’ve begun work on a new film project, which focuses on my philosophies behind creating. Current working title is “The Art Project” and I have just uploaded the first official clip from the opening of the film.

Well this is going to be a long semester, I can feel it. It’s only been a week and it already seemed like forever. Redeeming qualities of this week = Finished a new painting, I have tomorrow off, and because of tomorrow I can work on a film project. I know it’s been FOREVER since I talked about my films here, and I usually reserve that for my other blog, but this certainly warrants some kudos from myself. Aside from now having a rather class official site for my films, I’ve been putting a lot of work into my projects for this year. Which, unfortunately has been more of my focus lately than my artwork. Not to worry though, here’s a finished piece to keep you all interested, and intrigued for this new year.

Coffee on the Road & Updates

Well, here's some fun news. This morning I began dialogue with a recently opened coffee shop and I could very well be getting them to put up my work there! I know right? So even though I didn't get my sale back in November this is certain to be a nice alternative. I'm also looking into a membership to the North Hills Arts Center for this up coming year, in which I'll be able to participate in various shows throughout the year. Although slowly, things are progressing.

And I was just thinking. I really don't have any winter paintings...hrm. I should paint something wintery. Like a Christmas tree farm. Yeah that would be good.

So anyway about this painting to the side here. I worked this out for this month's topic at my other fun blog: Simple Distractions. To those who are unaware of such a blog. It's a current community of 2 other artists to create "Simple Distractions" based off of a monthly topic. In order to keep other artists like ourselves drawing. This month's topic has been "The Road Less Traveled" and luckily for me I was able to work it into a painting this time.

Also on the semi-artistic note, I've been working a bit with my films lately. And although I'm not in main stage production I've been doing a lot of prep work for my projects for next year. Well the preps are coming faster that I had hoped...for what you may ask. Well, none other than my first big show/sale! This past week I got the approval for a show to which that any sale I make I would donate half of said sale to my church's mission project. So not only will I be in the setting for a big turn out but people will show up to help out the cause. Which painting is this exactly...click the "here" and it's the third one down.

So when is this show exactly? I'm not sure yet. This year for sure. Possible November, but I'm hoping for say, middle of October. I'll keep you guys updates on any changes.

Oh and I am working on another illustration...but it's not a top priority right now.

Hey all!

Well it was this past Saturday that I finally jumped on board the Wii generation. So needless to say it has distracted me from my computer, but strangely brought me to my feet for a change.

If anyone saw the previous post, I put up a little sketch of this egg tree concept that I was going to paint, and did (partially), but with few satisfying results. So through some short spontaneous actions I blew it up to a larger scale and did a micron pen rendering of it. It turned out much better comparatively.

I'm also working on another such pen rendering of a rather stunning piece of digital art I found on Deviant Art a while back and have been using as a computer desktop background on and off for the past 6 months or so. So I should have that posted either tomorrow or Wednesday if I don't get distracted by the wii again (which I probably will).

Hey everyone...just some new stuff I was playing around with in photoshop today. The sky city one isn't as impressive as it may seem. I was using these city and cloud brushes that are more like stamps than brushes. Other than that Not much to speak of right now. I've been working on a portrait (sort of out of my character I know), of this musician from youtube (...user/jamesblackmusic), but yeah. I've pretty much just been working lately. And now my sketchbook is closed...which is bad. I try to keep it open to keep ideas flowing but I'm kinda back in a slump again. I guess school needs to start back up for me. But it's still the middle of summer. Dang.

Well in strange but blissful excitement I arose early this morning to paint. And as luck would have it I finished 4 paintings in under 4 hours. Crazy! And to add to the excitement all of them are rather good. At least good in the sense that they were successful.

And even more coolness 2 of them I have a time lapse video for. Yea!!!

Ringing in the New

It's June and it's time to ring in the new. New paintings and new layout with advanced design with Blogger's new design templates.

So this is the first painting since the mural, and the first one for this month. Although I am working on some other new ones as well, which should be up within the next few days as I finish them.
